Connecting Mistral as an App connection
If you are using Mistral Vibe (chat) as your AI Assistant, you can connect it to Frnd as an App connection. This guide shows you how.
The terminology used by Mistral is a connector which corresponds to what we call an App connection. The technical term behind this is an MCP connection. So when you read this (and other guides), know that these 3 concepts are different sides of the same coin. That is... if it had 3 sides.
The set-up is a one-time task: Add Frnd as a connector once, approve it, and it is ready to use in your chats.
The screenshots are (mostly) from Mistral's web app.
Note: You need an account with Mistral to configure this. A free account is sufficient.
-
Add a custom connector
Connectors are Mistral's name for external services it can reach – Frnd will be one of them.
- In Mistral's sidebar, click Context, then Connectors.
- On the Connectors page, click Add connector. This opens Mistral's connector marketplace.
- Frnd is not in the marketplace list – instead, click Add a custom connector.
-
Fill in the connector details
Mistral now asks for a few details about the connector.
- Connector name: anything you like – Frnd is a fine choice.
- Server:
https://app.frnd.dk/mcp/v1 - Leave rest of the settings to their defaults:
- Authentication: OAuth2.1. Leave Advanced OAuth Settings off – Frnd does not need them.
- Visibility: Personal. The connector signs in as you, so keep it to yourself.
- Click Add connector.
-
Authorize with Frnd
Mistral now sends you to Frnd, where you approve the connection – this is the OAuth sign-in.
- Frnd asks you to authorize mistral-mcp-client. You can give the session a label (e.g. "Mistral") so you can recognize it later. Click Approve.
-
Enter your encryption passphrase and click Continue. This is the
passphrase that encrypts your confidential details.
- If this is your first App Connection, you will be asked to create it here.
-
Check the connection
Back in Mistral, the connector page shows the connection as Valid, and under Tools you will find the abilities you have enabled in Frnd. Mistral lets you allow or block each tool individually, if you want yet another layer of control.
-
Use it in a chat
One last thing: Frnd must be switched on for the chat you are in.
- Click the + in the message box and pick Connectors.
- Tick Frnd in the list. Its icon now appears next to the +.
- Ask away – Mistral can now reach your connected services through Frnd.
Changed your abilities in Frnd?
Mistral cannot reload the list of tools from an MCP connector. So when you change your abilities in Frnd – rename one, enable or disable one, add or remove one – Mistral may keep working from the old list.
The remedy: On the connector page, open the connection's ⋮ menu, Delete it, and connect again – you will go through the authorization from step 3 once more.
Not something we can change from our end, unfortunately.
