Connecting ChatGPT as an App connection
If you are using ChatGPT (chat) as your AI Assistant, you can connect it to Frnd as an App connection. This guide shows you how.
The terminology used by ChatGPT is a plugin which corresponds to what we call an App connection. The technical term behind this is an MCP connection. So when you read this (and other guides), know that these 3 concepts are different sides of the same coin. That is... if it had 3 sides.
The set-up is a one-time task: Add Frnd as a plugin once, sign in, and it is ready to use in your chats.
The screenshots are mostly from ChatGPT's web app.
Note: You need an account with ChatGPT to configure this – and a free account is not sufficient: Custom plugins require developer mode, which is available on the paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu).
-
Enable developer mode
ChatGPT keeps custom plugins behind a switch called developer mode. Flipping it is a one-time task.
- Click your account name in the bottom left, and pick Settings.
- In the settings, pick Security and login.
- Scroll down to Developer mode and switch it on.
Developer mode is required because Frnd is not present in ChatGPT's Plugin directory – yet. We are working on it :)
That is also why ChatGPT marks the switch with an Elevated risk badge – its blanket warning for plugins that are not in its own directory.
-
Add a plugin
Plugins are ChatGPT's name for external services it can reach – Frnd will be one of them.
- In ChatGPT's sidebar, click Plugins.
- On the Plugins page, click the + in the top right.
-
Fill in the plugin details
ChatGPT now asks for a few details about the plugin.
- Name: anything you like – Frnd is a fine choice.
- Description: optional; also anything you like.
- Connection: Server URL, and the address is
https://app.frnd.dk/mcp/v1 - Authentication: OAuth. Leave Advanced OAuth settings alone – Frnd does not need them.
- Tick I understand and want to continue – this is the developer-mode caution from step 1 again, this time for the plugin itself.
- Click Create.
-
Sign in with Frnd
ChatGPT presents the new plugin and explains what adding it means. Click Sign in with Frnd.
-
Authorize with Frnd
ChatGPT now sends you to Frnd, where you approve the connection – this is the OAuth sign-in.
- Frnd asks you to authorize ChatGPT. You can give the session a label (e.g. "ChatGPT") so you can recognize it later. Click Approve.
-
Enter your encryption passphrase and click Continue. This is the
passphrase that encrypts your confidential details.
- If this is your first App connection, you will be asked to create it here.
-
Check the connection
Back in ChatGPT, the plugin page lists your Frnd account under Connected accounts.
ChatGPT does not list the individual tools. Instead, under Permissions, you pick one of four levels for when it should ask you first: Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions (the default), or Allow all actions. This is yet another layer of control, should you want one.
-
Use it in a chat
That is it – no further switches to flip. Start a new chat, ask away, and ChatGPT reaches your connected services through Frnd – asking you first, according to the permission level you picked.
Changed your abilities in Frnd?
ChatGPT can reload the list of tools from an MCP plugin. So when you change your abilities in Frnd – rename one, enable or disable one, add or remove one – just refresh the list: On the plugin page, next to Information, click Refresh (close to the bottom of the page).
